2020 Welsh Ride Restrictions

It's beginning to feel as if we're nearing an exit to the Covid-19 lockdown as some Welsh restrictions are slowly being lifted.

UPDATE - May 29th, Mark Drakeford appended the lockdown rules slightly. The next update is to be on 21 June. Read more...

It's crucial to understand that Wales and England have developed very different plans for lifting restrictions. For Wales; outdoor movements were slightly modified beginning June 01, 2020.

People are being encouraged to cycle alone, or only with people from their home.

They are expected to stick to routes they know and take care of walkers, runners or other cyclists. They should stay two metres apart and stop to let people go by.

The guidance request to cycle no further than a reasonable walking distance from home has been removed.

The Welsh government announced on April 24th new guidlines for exercising during Coivd-19 Lockdown.

We were finally given some concrete information regarding distances and how far it is considered reasonable for someone to cycle from their home.

The guidelines have been vague regarding the actual distance someone could be from home. I was pretty excited when I found the article in Wales Online. I've tried to stay within 4-5 miles from home, so this new guideline will open up my rides considerably. I've included the map above to show the 10 mile radius from our home here in Oakdale. It's surprisingly wide. However, I won't be going nearly that far. I will still follow the recommendation about being able to walk home if I experience some technical difficulty. Here's an extract below:
We understand that "reasonable distance" is within 10 miles of your home.

If you were found cycling 20 miles or more from your home and are stopped by police, this would not been seen as a "reasonable distance".

    The rules are:

  • People are expected to only cycle alone or with members of their household, on routes they know well, and that are well within their ability level.
  • Cyclists on shared paths should be considerate of walkers, runners and other people cycling: they should stay two metres from others, slow their pace and stop to let people pass as appropriate.
  • Cycling should be local, as a rule of thumb limited to travelling no further than a reasonable walking distance from home.
  • Exercising by cycling significant distances from home is not considered to be a reasonable excuse for leaving home.
  • Cycling to work, or for work, is a reasonable excuse to be outside (so long as going to work, or doing the work, is itself justifiable).

And with that sorted, I'm off to clean my bike. Stay safe everyone!

Cheers! - cm
